WILLIAM SALTER
Saltram co-founder & owner 1859-1871
William Salter emigrated from England with his family in 1839 destined for South Australia. They moved to the Barossa Valley and purchased land in the new district. In 1844 William built his property, Mamre Brook House. He began raising cattle and sheep and then switched to copper mining, before making a life of wine.

EDWARD SALTER
Co-founder; winemaker 1859-1902
In 1859 William Salter and his son Edward, then aged 22, founded the firm W, Salter & Son. Their first vintage in 1862 produced 8,000 liters of Shiraz that they called ‘No.1’, Edward was primarily responsible for winemaking, and established a number of principles upon which modern Australian winemaking is founded.

Leslie Salter, Edward’s son, focused on red wine production for export. He was a member of the South Australian Wine Association for 20 years and one of the Commonwealth Government’s Wine Overseas Marketing Board, promoting Australian wines for export.

FRED LUDLOW
Winemaker 1937-1952
Beginning as a cellar hand at age 18, Fred Ludlow’s outstanding record of service at Saltram lasted for 63 years. He was appointed cellar manager in 1937 and remained Saltram’s winemaker until handing over duties in 1953, although he remained at Saltram. Fred Ludlow’s gift was fortified and sweet “Sherry” (Apera).

BRYAN DOLAN
Winemaker 1953-1959
Bryan Dolan took over the winemaking helm from 1953-1957. During his time he restored the Mamre Brook homestead and contributed many high quality fortified wines, of which we continue to reap the benefits today in Mr. Pickwick’s Tawny. Byran continued to oversee operations and won the inaugural Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1962 for the 1961 Metala Claret.

PETER LEHMANN
Winemaker 1959-1979
The legendary Peter Lehmann succeeded Bryan Dolan at Saltram in 1959. He encouraged the increased planting of Cabernet Sanvignon, boosted the credibility of Saltram white wines, and harvested grapes earlier to give better pH control. With a succession of excellent vintages in the 60s and 70s he cemented the success of most post-war Saltram.

Although a short tenure, David Armstrong oversaw the beginning of a three year upgrade to the Saltram winery. He improved equipment and facilities for a greater focus on premium wines and made new styles more drinkable early in their life.

Winemaker 1981-1992
Mark Turnbull’s decade was instrumental in firming Saltram’s reputation for producing quality white wines, in particular Chardonnay and Riesling. Many, including Mamre Brook Chardonnay, were much acclaimed at Australian and international wine shows.

NIGEL DOLAN
Winemaker 1992 – 2007
In 1992 Bryan Dolan’s son, Nigel, became senior winemaker. He focused on Barossa sourced grapes and classic Saltram wine styles. He was named South Australian Red Winemaker of the Year in 1996 and Barossa Winemaker of the Year in 2000. In 2003 Nigel won The Jimmy Watson Trophy for Saltram.

In 2005 Shavaughn Wells began working on Saltram red wines alongside Barossa legend Nigel Dolan.
Shavaughn Wells was appointed senior winemaker in 2008. Shavaughn introduced Saltram’s Single Vineyard Collection, and in 2009 mandated that The Journal Shiraz be sourced exclusively from Centenarian vines aged over 100 years. A 2008 Len Evans Scholar , in 2016 she was awarded Winestate’s 2016 Australian Winemaker of the Year and in 2017 was inducted as a Baron of Barossa.

亚历克斯 16 岁时在法国做交换生,寄宿于南法罗纳河谷的一个家庭,此时他就发现了自己对葡萄酒的热爱。被周围的环境熏陶后,他回到阿德莱德维特大学校园后坚持学习葡萄栽培,同时也是对旅行的热衷,让他回到法国,在玛萨森·卡普蒂埃工作了一段时间,这期间得到了宝贵的经验。他把这些宝贵的经验带到了澳大利亚,贡献给了锁唇酒庄。
ALEX MACKENZIE
WINEMAKER 2017 – CURRENT
Saltram’s tenth winemaker, Alex MacKenzie, joined as senior winemaker in 2017 who used His style is down to earth — with a focus on premium fruit sourcing, keeping winemaking simple and working with the viticulture team to optimize the vines. This enables a pure expression of Saltram’s exquisite fruit and of the Barossa; and long-lived, balanced wines.
Alex discovered his passion for wine when he was 16, whilst living in the Rhône Valley as an exchange student with a French family. Ignited by his surroundings, Alex went on to study viticulture at the Waite campus University in Adelaide and his thirst for travel led him back to France to work a vintage at Maison M. Chapoutier, where he gained invaluable experience which he bought back to Australia and, particularly, Saltram.
